According to a report by People Magazine, Gwyneth Paltrow was in court on March 24th, 2023, for the fourth day of her civil trial related to a skiing accident that occurred on February 26th, 2016, at Utah's Deer Valley Resort. The actress, who is 50 years old, testified in court and was asked about the single dollar in damages she is asking for if the jury rules in her favor. Paltrow stated that the amount is symbolic because the damages would actually be more.
The plaintiff’s attorney, Kristin VanOrman, asked Paltrow about the symbolic nature of the request and whether she learned about it from Taylor Swift, who also asked for $1 in symbolic damages in her case. Paltrow initially claimed that she was not familiar with Swift's case, but later said that she is now aware of it.
Paltrow's attorneys objected to the relevance of the question and whether Paltrow was familiar with the details of Swift's case. When asked if she was good friends with Swift, Paltrow stated that they were friendly but not good friends. She mentioned that she had taken her kids to one of Swift's concerts before but they do not talk often.
The trial relates to allegations that Paltrow crashed into retired optometrist Terry Sanderson on a Park City, Utah, ski slope, causing permanent brain damage and breaking his ribs. Paltrow has claimed that Sanderson crashed into her and filed a counterclaim seeking just $1 in damages and attorney's fees. Sanderson, who is 76 years old, claims that the incident was a hit-and-run and is suing for $300,000 (he initially sued for $3 million).
